Application of Fiber Reinforced Polymers for Structural Retrofitting of buildings in Lagos, Nigeria

Abstract
Structural retrofitting is a vital aspect of building maintenance and sustainability. Fibre Reinforced Polymers are being speedily embraced globally for structural retrofitting of existing dilapidated buildings due their strength, non-corrosive property and light weight. But this may not be the case in the construction industry in Nigeria. Therefore, there is a need to understand the perception, attitude, level of awareness, acceptance and utilization of Fibre Reinforced Polymer composites as a good alternative for structural retrofitting of Nigerian buildings. The study used a mixed method of qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis. 5 point-likert scale questionnaire was used for field survey in addition to semi structured interviews of professionals in Lagos. The research findings from the qualitative analysis showed several important insights regarding awareness, acceptance, perception and challenges of using Fibre Reinforced Polymers for structural retrofitting in Nigeria. Strategies to increase the use of fibre reinforced polymers were also recommended.
