Abstract
The research established a potential road application of tar sand found commercially in Ondo state, Nigeria, which produced a preliminary technical report from the standardised experiments and methodology. The study evaluated the Aggregate Crushing Value (ACV), Aggregate Impact Value (AIV), Los Angeles Abrasion (LAA) and the Bitumen penetration of the tar sand asphalt composite to assess its reliability for road construction. ACV was revealed to be 28%, AIV was 23 %, and LAA was 38%. This suggests that the tar sand aggregate possesses good strength and crushing resistance, with acceptable ranges for road surfacing and potential use for low-traffic areas. The bitumen penetration value was as low as 17mm, suggesting good resistance to rutting and bleeding, and best used in areas characterised by hot climates. However, from the results of experiments conducted, the Tar sands would need additives and other modifications to find a wider range of applications for road construction. This is expected to lower the cost of road construction and the infrastructural deficit faced by the country.

Key words: Tar Sand, Road Construction, Aggregate Crushing Value, Aggregate Impact Value, Los Angeles Abrasion, Bitumen Penetration
